Benefits of facial steaming 🧖🏽‍♀️

Ever wonder what facial steaming does during your facial?

Tech Highlight 🧰:

Today’s post is one of many that will cover the different equipment and techniques that we use in our studio to give you that #nuclearglow.

What is facial steaming💨?

At Nu-Clear, we utilise a facial steamer. This piece of equipment holds water that is heated rapidly by heating elements. This creates a fine mist of steam, with varying setting that react with the steam to create an ozone vapour (more on this below). We generally apply this between 5-8 minutes max during a session for the listed benefits in this article.

An oldie but a goodie:

Steam has been used for centuries in the form of saunas and hot baths, however the more modern electrical forms have been in use for decades in professional facial care.

With the facial care landscape constantly striving for the latest and greatest gadgets, I feel this pursuit leaves old staples like facial steaming on the back burner.

Here is a list of reasons why I personally love facial steaming in my treatment room.

Eases skin cleansing 🧼:

Steaming can assist in the cleansing process of a facial. The mixture of gentle heat and water aids the emulsification of cleansers, allowing an easier breakdown of debris and products on the skin.

Enhanced exfoliation:

The moist heat of a steamer can help swell and soften surface skin cells, helping them to shed more easily.

Facial steaming can also boost the effects of an enzyme peel, as the proteolytic enzymes are triggered by moisture and heat.

Boost circulation :

Heat from facial steaming can increase microcirculation in the skin, assisting oxygenation and transportation of key nutrient to cells.

Prepares for extractions

The skin softening, cleansing and exfoliating benefits of facial steaming are beneficial for dislodging impactions in the skin and can help ease the process of extracting blackheads.

Kills bacteria 🦠:

As steam passes over the UV light in the head of the steamer, it exchanges and converts both the water and the oxygen molecules to produce ozone vapor. This ozone setting of the steamer can reduce the bacteria that is commonly associated with acne.

⛔️Skin steaming isn’t for every skin type and when over-used or incorrectly used, can cause:

  • Excess skin dehydration

  • Scolds from heat being applied too closely

  • Exacerbate facial redness and dilation of distended capillaries (telangiectasias)

  • Flare hyperpigmentation.

For the reasons listed above, I don’t love the idea of facial steamers for home use. We suggest to leave it to a professional setting  👍🏽
